Poon Hill Trek Outline Itinerary
- Day 1: Arrive in Kathmandu.
- Day 2: Drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara – 7 hours
- Day 3: Drive to Nayapul (1:20 hrs.) and trek to Tikhedhunga (1500m) – 3 to 4 hours walk
- Day 4: Trek from Tikhedhunga to Ghorepani (2826m) – 6 hours walk

Poon Hill Trek Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive in Kathmandu.
Day 2: Drive from Kathmandu-Nayapul and trek to Hile.
Max. Altitude: 1460m.
Duration: 7 hrs drive, and 1,5 hrs trek
We will drive by mini Toyota Hiace from Kathmandu directly to Nayapul, we will follow the Prithvi Highway which connects Kathmandu and Pokhara.
For the first half of the journey it runs almost parallel to the Trisuli River, and the mighty Himalayas come closer in view. Once we reached Nayapul, we start our trek from Nayapul. After a short walk of 15 minutes along the bank of the Modi Khola, we enter Birethanti (1015 metres), a big village with many shops and tea houses.
The trail runs along the Bhurungdi Khola north bank from there, the trail steadily climbs up to Hille at 1460 meters on the side of the valley and after the short climb, we reach Hille. Today’s walk offers a short and relatively easy day which enables us to get used to Nepal’s trekking experience. Overnight at lodge.
Day 3: Trek to Ghorepani
Max. Altitude: 2840m.
Trek Duration: 5 to 6 hrs.
After breakfast, we’re all set to trek to Ghorepani. We’re going to pass through Tikhedhunga (1,577m) and Ulleri (2,070m) and Banthanti (2,250m) before we get to Ghorepani.
These are small villages, inhabited by a local ethnic community, the Magar people. Oak trees and the forests of the rhododendron add to this place’s ambience. The surrounding landscape and nature are at its best.
You can expect good guesthouses and restaurants with the growing number of trekkers every year. Ghorepani’s scenery is breathtaking. We’ll be eating later in the evening in one of the tea houses where we’ll stop to rest.
A wonderful day awaits. You’ll have to sleep early as our hike begins before dawn.
Day 4: Hike up to Poon hill and trek to Ghandruk
Max. Altitude: 3210m.
Trek Duration: 6 to 8 hrs.
The 4th day starts before dawn. We’re going to hike up Poon Hill (3210m), and this scenic walk takes about 45 minutes.
The whole trip is to see the beautiful sunrise from this hill. This is absolutely spectacular. It’s so famous, without a doubt.
After breakfast at Ghorepani we head for Ghandruk, a mesmerizing Gurung people village. The journey will take about 6-8 hours down the hill. When we pass through beautiful forests, ridges and small streams, we’ll be descending.
We are almost there when we get to a long flight of stone stairs.
Following the stairs, we enter Gurung ethnic model Ghandruk village. Ghandruk village presents local traditions and culture
You can also enjoy the nature and hospitality that the village’s people serve. The traditional clothes, homes, kitchen and the food you eat can only be taken back in photos and memories with you.
You can also choose to visit the local Gurung museum where you can try the traditional men’s and women’s Gurung dress.
The night is then spent with the Gurung people at the local tea house, enjoying beautiful traditional music. You can also try the local Gurung dishes.
Day 6: Trek to Nayapul (1010 m) and drive back to Kathmandu.
Max. Altitude: 1400m.
Duration: 7 – 8 hrs drive, and 2 – 3 hrs. trek
It is the last day of our organized journey. Heading downhill, the trail back to Nayapul is pleasant and natural to pass through the green forests, to spot some rare birds and flowers, enjoy the time!
We arrive Nayapul then take us back to Pokhara for an hour drive, then we drive back to Kathmandu. Return to the capital of Nepal bustle city within about 7 – 8 hours. We have a farewell dinner in a traditional Nepalese restaurant in the evening.
Day 7: Free day / Fly to home.
Today you can either stay in Kathmandu and enjoy a free day, or leave for your respective countries. Our staff will drop you off at the airport as per your flight schedule.
Poon Hill Trek Difficulty
This is an easy trek compared to other, higher-altitude trekking in Nepal. On day 2, a steep climb up the stone staircase “3380 steps in total”, from Tikhedhunga to the Ghorepani, 1385 meters of altitude reach in a day is not to be taken lightly.
The trekking duration each day will depend on your physical fitness level and how much you like to pause to enjoy the views.
Poon Hill Weather
Trekking in Annapurna region is the best in spring (End of February to May) and autumn (August to November). The days are sunny and warm but the nights are a bit cold and can fall to freezing at higher elevations.
Poon hill trek is doable all year round. The trail gets busier in the spring and autumn but monsoon and winter are a bit quieter. Annapurna, Ghorepani Poon hill is an ideal trek for all seasons.
