Poon Hill (Pun Hill) is located in the Annapurna region of Nepal towards the north of Pokhara valley. Poon hill-Ghorepani trekking is one of the most popular short treks in Nepal ideally good for short time trekking holiday which is situated in the foothills of the Annapurna Himalayan range. The trek also covers some part of the Annapurna Base Camp trail.

The significant highlight of this trek is undoubtedly the climb of Poon hill located at 3205 meters from sea level. The Poon hill is the best viewpoint for the panoramic views of the 32 snow-capped mountains including Annapurna (8,091m) and Dhaulagiri (8,167m). The guide will wake you up early morning to catch the stunning sunrise view from the Poon hill.

One of the popular villages of Poon Hill Ghorepani trekking route is Ghandruk and the Ghandruk has a large traditional settlement of Gurung ethnic people. The views are simply wow following the well-developed trekking trail.

The Weather

Trekking in Annapurna region is the best in spring (End of February to May) and autumn (August to November). The days are sunny and warm but the nights are a bit cold and can fall to freezing at higher elevations. Poon Hill trek is doable all the year round. The trail gets busier in the spring and autumn but monsoon and winter are a bit quieter. Annapurna, Ghorepani, Poon Hill is an ideal trek for all seasons.

Cost and Ideas

The cost of the trek might vary according to the agency you choose to go with, the services, the itinerary or certain unexpected situations that might occur. Generally, the trek costs about USD 575 which includes guesthouses accommodation on the trek, the entry fees for Annapurna and other permits, professional guide, porters and the transportation with all meals and others depending on the trek package you choose. The Annapurna Conservation permit and TIMS trekker’s permit cost around USD 33.

Short Poon Hill Trek Itinerary – 6 Nights / 7 Days

Day 1:  Drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara – 7 hours

Day 2: Drive to Nayapul (1:20 hrs.) and trek to Tikhedhunga (1500m) – 3 to 4 hours walk

Day 3: Trek from Tikhedhunga to Ghorepani (2826m) – 6 hours walk

Day 4: Hike to Poon Hill (3205m) and Trek from Ghorepani to Tadapani (2721m) – 6 hours

Day 5: Trek from Tadapani to Ghandruk Village – 3 hours walk

Day 6: Trek from Ghandruk to Nayapul and drive back to Pokhara –  7 hours walk and 1:30m drive

Day 7: Drive back to Kathmandu – 7 hours

Trek Difficulty

This is a quite easy trek comparing to other, higher-altitude trekking in Nepal. On day 2, a steep climb up the stone staircase “3380 steps in total”, from Tikhedhunga to the Ghorepani, 1385 meters of altitude reach in a day is not to be taken lightly. The trekking duration each day will depend on your physical fitness level and how much you like to pause to enjoy the views.

Getting There

Pokhara is the main starting point for almost all the treks in the Annapurna area, including Poon Hill trek. From Kathmandu to Pokhara 25-min by flight or approximately 7 hrs. drive. From Pokhara, you’ll either take a private car / jeep or public bus / taxi to Nayapul, where you’ll be dropped off to start your trek.
